چکیده

Particles present in the Earth’s atmosphere provide reactive surfaces for potentially important chemistry. The role of heterogeneous reactions of trace atmospheric gases on solid aerosol surfaces present in the troposphere is not well understood. Laboratory investigations can provide a basis for understanding the detailed molecularlevel physical chemistry of these atmospheric reactions. Kinetic data measured in the laboratory, along with the information provided by spectroscopic studies, can be incorporated into atmospheric chemistry models in order to gain a greater understanding of how heterogeneous chemistry affects the chemical balance of the troposphere. Laboratory studies of the heterogeneous uptake of nitric acid, HNO3, on oxide, carbonate and mineral dust particles, and the heterogeneous formation of nitrous acid, HONO, on wetted-SiO2 and soot particles are highlighted as two examples of important heterogeneous processes in the troposphere.

Chemical and photochemical reactions on mineral oxide surfaces in gaseous and liquid phases: environmental implications of fate, transport and climatic impacts of mineral dust aerosol

Mineral dust aerosols emitted from the Earth crust during various natural and anthropogenic processes continuously alter the chemical balance of the atmosphere via heterogeneous processes and thus, impact on the global climate. Understanding of heterogeneous chemistry and photochemistry on mineral dust has become vital to accurately predict the effect of mineral dust loading on the Earth’s atmo...

Heterogeneous Chemistry and Tropospheric Ozone

Ozone is produced in the troposphere by gas-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons and CO catalyzed by hydrogen oxide radicals (HOx ≡ OH + H + peroxy radicals) and nitrogen oxide radicals (NOx ≡ NO+NO2). Heterogeneous chemistry involving reactions in aerosol particles and cloud droplets may affect O3 concentrations in a number of ways including production and loss of HOx and NOx, direct loss of O3, an...

Assessment of the global impact of aerosols on tropospheric oxidants

[1] We present here a fully coupled global aerosol and chemistry model for the troposphere. The model is used to assess the interactions between aerosols and chemical oxidants in the troposphere, including (1) the conversion from gas-phase oxidants into the condensed phase during the formation of aerosols, (2) the heterogeneous reactions occurring on the surface of aerosols, and (3) the effect ...

Exploration of heterogeneous chemistry in model atmospheric particles using extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis

As models of the composition and heterogeneous chemical reactions of the troposphere undergo refinement, novel application of state-of-the-art analytical techniques will be necessary to propound realistic characterizations of mineral dust chemistry. In this study, strontium carbonate particles treated with gaseous nitric acid and nitrogen dioxide were examined with X-ray absorption fine structu...

Development of a Mathematical Model for Prediction of Pollutants Emission in D. I. Diesel Engines

Major pollutants emission from Direct-Injection (D.I) diesel engines are predicted by means of a mathematical model. In order to construct such a model, an integral Multi-Zone Combustion Model (MZCM) is formulated, which basically consists of jet mixing and combustion submodels. In MZCM, variation of injection pressure is considered. Also time period of ignition delay is predicted by considerin...
